Why Neck Wrinkles Become More Noticeable With Age

As we age, our skin naturally changes. One of the biggest shifts is a gradual loss of elasticity—which often shows up early on the neck.

Skin firmness is supported by two key structural components:

  • Collagen: helps ā€œhold upā€ the skin like a supportive framework
  • Elastin: helps the skin spring back and maintain flexibility

When collagen and elastin decrease or weaken over time, the skin can’t bounce back as easily—leading to sagging and wrinkles.

Loss of collagen and elastin can reduce skin elasticity and contribute to neck wrinkles

Areas with thinner skin—such as the eyelids, neck, and even the backs of the hands—tend to show aging sooner. On the neck, wrinkles can appear in two main patterns:

  • Horizontal neck lines (the ā€œneck ringsā€)
  • Vertical neck wrinkles (creases that become more visible with movement)

Because these two types of wrinkles have different causes, the treatment approach should be different, too.

Horizontal vs. Vertical Neck Wrinkles

Vertical neck wrinkles: In today’s post, I’m focusing on these—especially the fine, ā€œcreasedā€ look that can show up when talking or making expressions.

Horizontal neck lines: These are commonly treated with options like fillers, Ulthera, and skin Botox. I’ve shared these treatments in previous posts as well.

Case Study: Vertical Neck Wrinkles in a Woman in Her 40s

Concern: Although she had some horizontal neck lines, her main concern was the appearance of vertical wrinkles—a ā€œchicken combā€-like texture that stood out when she spoke or moved her facial muscles.

She felt that the skin on her neck had become thinner and more creased over time, and it bothered her a lot in daily life.

In many cases, vertical neck wrinkles are closely related to reduced collagen and elastin. For more meaningful improvement, we often focus on reinforcing the skin’s structure rather than only smoothing the surface temporarily.

Patient Experience

She had already been receiving elasticity-focused treatments regularly and was also doing skin Botox for her face. While she was happy with her facial results, she’d consistently felt that her neck was still a ā€œmissing piece.ā€

After the neck wrinkle radius treatment, she shared that she felt very satisfied—and genuinely relieved.

Thank you.
